About Yoga

Yoga means many things to different people. But for Di, the practice is about providing a space to connect with yourself, making you feel healthier, stronger, more confident and flexible, both physically and emotionally. This allows stillness and calm to be part of our busy lives.

Her practice is primarily Hatha, working through the body, linking asanas with the breath with focused attention and awareness. This is designed to work gradually and systematically through layers of tension, from the outermost twinges to more subtle deeper levels.

The regular practice of Hatha yoga can, Di believes, both awaken and balance mind and body – drawing attention inwards, from the external to the internal world. This ability to ‘tune out’ from the hyper reality of daily sensations helps provide tremendous relief – and a genuine sense of bliss.

This means that yoga is very effective in supporting busy lives – creating both a mental and physical space for stillness.

The importance of breath

The root of the word jiva is jiv, meaning ‘to breathe’ – a key element in all of Di’s yoga classes. A range of breathing techniques – including classical pranayama techniques – is taught, depending on the skills and experience of the students. Controlling the prana through focused breathing – as well as asana (postures) and relaxation techniques – is central to the goal of steadying mental activity and bringing peace of mind and calm.
